Am I Better off Planning in Spreadsheets?

As finance professionals, we like to quantify the value of new sales & marketing initiatives; we all know those folks spend a lot. So, we set up tools to track their effectiveness and we’re pretty good at it. However, in last month’s webinar, we asked about 100 finance professionals to describe their planning software situation. The results are below:

Survey Results

What best describes your Planning Software Situation?

1. Not yet purchased planning software, use Excel - 40%

2. Purchased planning software, HAPPY w/ ROI - 8%

3. Purchased planning software, NOT HAPPY w/ ROI - 8%

4. Purchased planning software, Unsure about ROI - 44%

SOURCE: March 28th Webinar: Measuring the ROI of Planning Software

Although Excel is the software default for planning, it is not considered a “dedicated planning software package.” So, let’s throw out the 40% who reported using spreadsheets for planning. This gives us the pie chart below:

ROI Planning Software

73% report “Unsure of ROI” when asked about planning software

Wow! Nearly 3 out of 4 of the attendees who purchased planning software do not know if they made a good or bad decision. Whether you’re considering a dedicated planning package or have deployed planning software, how would you measure the ROI? Whether you’re “sure” or “unsure” about ROI, we’d love to hear your story.
